About

Food&Science mashed like mashed potatoes with a sprinkling of puns (underlined)! I am a Biology (Molecular) and Computer Science major and a Nutrition minor (when I graduate).

I do not get paid for blogging. There are no conflicting interests. If you, as a business or person, send me free food [please do!!], I will happily review it and thus promote it. :D However, I will not say good things if your product truly DOES suck. This is a blog. It is biased.

There are
1. Recipes
2. Product/Restaurant reviews
3. Rants about food science (no quackery!)

My favourite foods are (in no order)
1. Peanut butter
2. Whole wheat bread with a lot of crust
3. :. Peanut butter sandwiches
4. Avocado sushi
5. Various cheeses
6. Milk (both soy and cow)
7. Corn flakes without the HFCS/too much sugar
8. Various cereals
9. Vegemite
10. Cocoa powder (unsweetened) and dark chocolate
11. Coconut

This blog may interest people who:
1. Do not enjoy pre-heating ovens and enjoy baking with minimal energy.
2. Enjoy slightly eccentric combinations (apparently, it's not okay to pair pepper with tea until someone famous does it).
3. Like looking at pictures of food that originate from different parts of the world.
4. Don't care about plating. Sorry, but am I really going to eat a bundle of cinnamon sticks tied with satin ribbon when I munch on a plate of cookies?

Things I do when I cook that people usually don't do:
1. I do not preheat ovens. I also do not promptly take baked items out of the oven. I let them sit in the (off) oven for an extra 10 minutes to half a day, letting the remaining heat cook the food even further. This way, I get to turn off the oven earlier than the recipe specifies.
2. I keep all the butter wrappers in the freezer. Whenever a pan needs greasing, I just take out a wrapper and smear the little leftover globs of butter onto the pan.
3. I don't have cupcake/muffin pans so I reuse aluminium egg tart shells from when my sister eats egg tarts from the Chinese bakery.
4. I think in both metric and imperial units since I was exposed to both when I learned how to cook. So, my recipes may seem a bit convoluted.
5. I enjoy deviating from recipes. It's fun to experiment with unlikely flavour combinations.
6. I don't have parchment paper or wax paper.
7. It's become habit for  me to fold (figure 8) using the spoon when I make batter. I don't usually just mix (figure 0).
8. Buttermilk is just milk with lemon/lime juice and/or vinegar.
9. I don't have a whisk...always hand-mixing with a spoon!
10. I am very partial to making stuff from scratch (What?! No cake mix!? No "just add water!"??). This includes pie crusts.
11. I think I invented bubble tea cake and bubble tea cookies. Please let me know if I didn't.
